From what I understand from jews I used to know, you can't even walk in the door of most reputable synagogues unless you already have tithing up to date, and they check that shit every day.

They supposedly have to tithe more than that. For the rich synagogues in places like Malibu and La Jolla, they require set amounts instead of a percentage. One client of a financial firm had to pay 25 million a year due to his business being worth a certain amount. He didn't make 250 million a year mind you, but it's what they told him to pay based on what they felt he had to in order to attend.
