When you do a joke, you need to leave the element of surprise for the person hearing it. When you use the word "cell" you take away the surprise and kill the joke. If you had just said, "As he touches both walls he thinks 'Home sweet home'" it would at least have been a joke -- a very poor one, but a joke. The hearer would have needed to figure out for himself why the walls were so close together, and when he did so, he would get a little thrill of amusement and pleasure. But by using the word "cell" you took away that little thrill of discovery.
