No, they used a circle because an x was too similar to a cross for their irrational hatred. This is where the word "kike" comes from, the Yiddish word for circle (kikel).

That's interesting and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the original reason, like they heard that from their rabbi and it got telephone gamed into "x looks like cross".

Circle is the correct answer - X was what most used that could not write, but the kikels (circles in yiddish) didn't want even a "fallen over cross' or an X for them. Thats how much they hate Christ.
