Assuming a much smaller number though makes me wonder if that population control and the numerous brother wars in Europe helps account for the best population difference between Europe China and India

Harsh conditions are a big factor. But yes, the constant wars also played a big part. As for whitch burning, it was not about religion but the fact that these women murdered children in horrible ways for their potions and spells.

Is killing murderers really a population control program? I don't think there are enough to make a difference.
