To understand holocaust sacrifice, you need to know a little about sacrifice in general. Usually, when an animal was sacrified to God, the worshippers ate the animal, except for the blood and maybe certain bits which were given to God alone by burning them to ashes. The sacrifice rose up to God on the smoke of the sacrificial fire. The holocaust was special because it was a complete sacrifice to God -- the worshippers got nothing. The carcass was wholly consumed by flames, and thus wholly given to God. The reason the term was applied by Jews to the rounding up of Jews in concentration camps during WW2 is because Jewish rabbis saw this as a sacrifice of the Jewish people to God for past sins, in return for which they would receive Jerusalem back as a reward. The rabbis saw the Holocaust, as it was called after the war ended, as a necessary and willing sacrifice to God, in which the Germans played a part as much as the Jews who died in the camps. The Nazis were instruments of God, in this scenario. They delivered the lives of the Jews to God, and then the bodies were placed into the crematoria and *wholly consumed to ashes by the flames*. The bodies of the dead Jews became the holocaust offerings to God, in atonment for past sins. Needless to say, there was a magic number of offerings required to fulfill this prophecy. You guessed it -- six million. Nowhere close to six million Jews were killed during the war, let alone burned in the crematoria, but it had to be six million, so the Jewish propagandists who control our media made it six million.
