Alois was a bastard with no known father. No one will ever know who the father was. He could be the result of Solomon raping the servant Marie or of Marie getting pregnant from a boyfriend. There was local gossip that Solomon was the father because the family let her stay employed rather than kicking her out of their house in shame.
