People just don't get it. They read the Second Amendment as if it meant:
A government-controlled army is necessary for the security of any free country, including the United States. Citizens shall be allowed to keep and bear arms to ensure that the government can raise an army quickly.
They are shocked and appalled to learn that it means:
A country of free men who are unarmed against their government will not long remain free, therefore all citizens shall have the unfettered right to keep and take up arms against their government whenever it shall become necessary.
