Pop-music is Propped-up music.
Back when hardcopy media such as vinyl and compact disks were a thing the record promotors had a trick to make an album instantly go gold. They would go to the owner of a chain outlet (Sam Goody, Strawberries, Tower, etc.) and sign a contract that said, "Buy enough of this product to make it go gold and I will buy back any that do not sell." The chain outlet could not lose money so they would go for it.
I it is likely that there are now millions of shell accounts buying up digital copies of pop-music to make the current crop of vacuous, atonal warbling seem popular.
And to a lesser degree they used to grease the wheels of DJs too. Money, cocaine, payola, exclusivity, rights, a lot of pressure points to promote whatever music they wanted.
You forgot threats ('play this record over and over, or lose your kneecaps, feggit')
That is probably still happening. It might go some way to explaining why various SocMedia algorithms undergo such ridiculous contortions.
