I think one could get a lot of mileage by saying "Of course the germans hated the jews, they just had a major revolution where they tried to overthrow the german government." Realizing the jews tried to overthrow the government and realizing this is deliberately left out of history class was a major revelation for me.

There was a revolt in Germany in October 1918. This revolt led to Germany losing WWI, the monarchy falling, and the weimar republic being established. This revolt was overwhelmingly led by jews preaching bolshevism and socialism. That's why the Germans hated the jews.
Funny how the same stuff happened almost simultaneously in Russia too. The playing field for the massacre was just getting established.
