There's a handful of things I still use Chrome for (yeah, yeah, I know). I noticed when I tried saving the pdf for this journal article from biomedcentral (virologyj.biomedcentral.com), Chrome refused to save it.

I tried saving pdfs from random sites and they all saved no problem. Any pdf I tried to download from biomedcentral.com was blocked. Chrome opens the pdf for reading, but does not allow you to save them to your hard drive.

I guess I'm surprised that they'd stoop as low as blocking downloads of pdfs for published, peer-reviewed papers--in order to help slow the spread of covid misinformation, no doubt.

Here's what Chrome says about blocked downloads:

Chrome automatically blocks downloads that may try to cause problems on your device or online accounts, like:

Giving you viruses Leaking your private data Changing your browser settings Changing the settings on your computer or device Adding unwanted extensions or toolbars to your browser Performing unapproved actions within your Google Account Why the download was blocked Your file download may be blocked for one of a few reasons:

We think it might be a malicious, unwanted, uncommon, or insecure file. Malicious: You tried to download malware. Unwanted: You tried to download a deceptive piece of software. This program, disguised as a helpful download, may actually make unexpected changes to your computer or device. Uncommon: You tried to download an unfamiliar and potentially dangerous piece of software. Insecure: You tried to download a file or program that wasn't secure but was started on a secure page. In some cases, you can choose to download anyway. We've found that the website you tried to download the file from has been known to distribute malware.

biomedcentral.com is distributing malware? The "has been known" part makes it sound like it's something that happens on an ongoing basis. Riiiiiiiight...

Google is a big proponent of the vax, just like most software corporations.
