McIntyre was in the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001 when American Airlines Flight 77, commandeered by five terrorists, was flown into the side of the building, killing all on board including 64 passengers and crew, and 125 people in the Pentagon. He wrote his master’s thesis at the University of Maryland on persistence of conspiracy theories and misinformation based on his personal experience of having his reporting on CNN that day taken out of context in order to advance the false narrative the attack was a hoax.
