Oh do you remember when that former Iranian leader spoke at a US college some years back and one of the US students asked him about gay people in Iran. He replied "there are no gay people in Iran" and a room full of college liberals broke out into laughter and felt smug... w/ absolutely zero understanding of why he would say that. It blew up social media at the time. The gist was "he really doesn't think there are gay people in Iran"... never trying to understand why he was saying it.
I don't, but it definitely falls within the realm of plausibility that what you described occurred. Out of curiosity, why do you think the US students were laughing at the former Iranian leaders claims?
Oh sorry for deleting those comments the other day, felt like I'd over shared and didn't want to leave it posted.
