SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - On Thursday, July 1, the law requirement for a permit to purchase a pistol or revolver, and the requirement for a concealed carry permit in Iowa will be changing.

On April 2, 2021, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed House File 756 into law.

This law removes permit requirements to acquire a handgun and concealed carry of a handgun in the state. But Iowans can still request permits through their local sheriff's office if they meet the requirements.

Chief Deputy Tony Wingert with the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office says he encourages people to continue to get their permits because it's a faster process to prove to law enforcement that you've been cleared to own the firearm.

"We do the background check. It would be a quick way that if you have dealings with law enforcement to prove to law enforcement that, 'Hey, I am okay carrying this firearm' and if you buy firearms this permit is going to allow a quicker process," said Chief Deputy Wingert.

You are still required to have a federal criminal background check when purchasing from any federal firearms licensee. While private sellers don't have to require a permit, it is still illegal to sell to anyone prohibited from owning a firearm.

Wingert adds the concealed carry permit is also good for any state that Iowa has an agreement with.

"Also if you have your permit to carry, then you know then that you can go outside the state of Iowa, you can go into the other states that have reciprocity with the state of Iowa," said Wingert.

Currently, Iowa has a reciprocating agreement with 33 states, including all bordering states, except for Minnesota and Illinois.

That means your permit will be accepted in South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, and Wisconsin with some exceptions.
