DES MOINES, Iowa — A controversial bill, aiming to prevent employers, schools, health care providers and other organizations from requiring COVID-19 vaccinations, is currently under consideration at the Iowa Statehouse.
The bill is Senate File 193 and was moved ahead after a 2-1 subcommittee vote on Tuesday.
So far, there's a large lobbying effort against the bill with groups like the Iowa Hospital Association, Iowa School Nurses Organization and UnityPoint Health filing declarations against the measure.
According to the state legislative filing, there's also a large contingency of groups saying they are undecided on the bill like Alliant Energy, the Iowa Board of Regents and the Iowa Department of Public Health.
One group has filed a lobbying declaration in support of the bill - Informed Choice Iowa.
There is a similar bill introduced in the Iowa House by Rep. Jeff Shipley (R- Fairfield) - House File 330.
Both bills would also make it illegal for an employer to refuse to hire, fire or discriminate against someone who has not been vaccinated or force them to show proof of vaccination.
