Sounds like someone ripped off shareholders.

It's not a good sign for your company when a private equity firm buys it. They usually do some drastic change to the company and flip it, the way house flippers do a joke of a remodel before flipping.

Remember the EA acquisition of Bioware? It happened like this:

CTO of Bioware left Bioware to join a private equity firm. The private equity firm acquired Bioware. The private equity firm sold Bioware to EA. Former CTO of EA comes back to EA and is made the CEO.

Keeping servers alive costs money, so it's hard to tell. When every vendor and their brother sells cheap ESP8266-based switches, it's probably hard to make a profit.

or you keep your quality so high they are all looked down on as throwaway and your product is revered. I bought my western digital drives from the manufacturer and made sure they were top quality to they'd last, I wasn't buying some blue green black etc I bought datacenter storage drives that are designed for years of continuous use.

Average endurance of a normal mechanical switch, at least 30years

Standard electronic is dead in 10years, it used to be they last 20years (not amymore)

in any case, after 30years there will be no replacement, no standard, no interoperability.

I used to be a "yes we can" for smart homes, not anymore

I have X10 stuff here that's from the early 80s. It's still going strong, although I do lose one every once in a while. Electronics does die.

It's controlled by a set of BASH scripts and a copy of HEYU running on a pi. Chances are the Insteon stuff will continue to work fine with the efforts of many in the open-source community, like OpenHAB, but it should not need to rely on a remote service.

remote services = user is not totally in control and there is a huge security hole in that system.

Yes, old suff dies less quickly

news stuff... designed to break

Old standard are still somewhat supported, new standards.... they tend to do so many things that the protocol is often incomplete

new stuff is designed by shithead it seems when I see the current state of tech, garbage race to the bottom in quality and user satisfaction unless the user is a non tech moron.

Having cameras and microphones recording all over the house is creepy.
