I'm surprised that Maine is so close to the small end considering they don't have a large population center of welfare leeches living in garbage conditions

They probably live in older houses, their older construction is probably worthy and attractive to live in.

Nearly all Maine homes have full size cellars. Living space is usually defined as heated, above ground footage so these numbers may not reflect heated, finished basements. Also, economics are important. Maine has a lower average income and extra space costs more to heat and increased property taxes.
