>India is in the grip of a diabetes epidemic.
Once seen mainly as a disease of affluence, type two diabetes is now a common diagnosis across the country, affecting people of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds.
India now accounts for a quarter of all global diabetes cases, with an estimated 212 million people living with the disease, according to a major study published in 2023.
That tally, which combines known cases with an estimate for those that have so far gone undetected, is about eight times as high as it was in 1990, and means India has now probably surpassed China and the United States combined.
