I definitely see the net positive in the headline to slow down additional mass migration. But it also feels like so much of that damage has already been done.
Looking at this more cynically, it can be used to limit free travel of Europeans with opposition views. Passport checks are an opportunity to check the average persons papers to see if they're being mean on social media. Or if things get really bad, such as lockedowns, force people to stay in the country entirely.
