I recently became a landlord in the NYC Metro area. I inherited a full building, and am now in the process of choosing my own tenants. The number of illegals applying for my rentals is insane. Even though I put "Legal Residents of the United Sates only" in my advertisements, at least 30% of applicants are not legal. I don't respond to requests made in Spanish, or Syrian for that matter. They're all shocked when I ask for their Gov ID, SSID & bank statements. (none of which they have) One offered to pay me an illegal ammt of security deposit to avoid the approval process. One family couldn't afford an entire unit, they wanted to live in the master bedroom (5 of them) and rent out the smaller bedroom. They were unaware that we have occupancy laws here, that they're not allowed to move their entire village into a two bedroom unit. I've even had a few "students" apply. When asked they can only provide expired student visas and clearly should have left already. I had one illegal provide me a copy of an id that clearly wasn't him, and a current paystub from a company listed as having closed and dissolved three years ago. The address on the paystub was that of a totally different person. This is madness. Seems like they'll ship people to NYC from the mexican border, regardless of origin country, if you claim to have family here. Even though they're not supposed to work, they do. It's obvious they have some sort of state- assisted underground railroad helping them navigate.
