Someone replied to my post and I got a notification of course and we had a few messages back and forth. Then someone else replied to one of the other guys comments which greatly added to the conversation but I do not get a notification of this. I only discovered it accidentally and now I am wondering how many comments I have missed in the past.

I suggest a notification of any comment on any comment in a post you posted and maybe even just any post that you have commented on at all.

Maybe this option already exists and I just don't know.

Unfortunately notifications aren't designed that way. But If this post gets enough upvotes and interest, I might consider the extra work of writing a new function to handle this idea.

Posts with comment threads you've browsed and/or interacted with will show (new) with the count on the front page.

I would like the idea. I have also probably missed a LOT of comments and only sometimes saw them again when I was "doom scrolling" at some point. I don't reply to everything and I don't intentionally ignore people either but I think I have probably made people think that I was since I just missed the comment at some point.

You'll always get a notification for each comment that is directly replying to your posts or comments.

I don't think someone replying to someone else's comment in your posts are expecting a reply from you.

I agree that they are not expecting a reply but I think it is nice to fully participate in the conversation. This is a good example right here. I had to scroll way down to find this post again because I wanted to check on the interest level and I would have missed a bunch of comments had I not. Anyway, thanks for looking into it. I like the Pending tag, flair, whatever you call it. lol

That would be cool. I see that count thing but don't often go back far enough on the front page to see the (new) thing.

I have alternative suggestion if it's easier. It doesn't exactly do/solve the same thing. Alternative 4chan style flat comments view. That way comments are not hiding in deep comment trees. Nah, thinking about it it would require new ui etc so might not be simpler. OP suggestion is better nvm.

New comments and replies have a blue border/frame.

Maybe the (new) indicator would be more helpful if it wouldn't show up for replies I've already looked at or even replied to by clicking on the blue notification bubble. Never gave it much thought, tbh.

Either way, I'm pretty happy with the site behavior as it is in that regard.

It only gets reset when you open the comment threads, because the blue notification bubble on the envelope (PM box) shows all the notifications, not just comment replies in your posts.

Also, when you open the comment replies section in your PM and upvote comment replies or mark them as read. the count will decrease accordingly. Same goes for post replies.

I like the idea. If I could make a suggestion, maybe it could be in the form of a 'track' (from here) button that is at the top of each post (to track the whole post) as well as on each 'comment' (to track the comment thread from there). It could apply to anyone that clicks it, or perhaps only users above a certain level.
