Would make life so much easier for users. My daily is a 6s and sometimes an SE. Screens are small. Hard to tap that little player/viewer icon.

Open media from a front page? Hit that juicy thumbnail.

Open the post and comments? Hit that big header link.

This has been suggested before but not done for the following reasons:

there’s already an expando icon for media and because thumbs do not show when you open posts in mobile mode.
