A point system to keep track of how many comments a user has facilitated. Encourage people to start discussion instead of just farming points.

For example, you make a submission and 10 comments are posted under it (not including yours), you get +10 Discussion Starter points (or whatever you want to call it).

Likewise, if you make a comment and 5 people comment under it (regardless of chain depth), you get +5 points.

Example:

[–] gaylord 1 point (+1|-0) 1 hour ago:
|   > I'm a faggot
|
|-- [–] picman 69 points (+69|-0) your mom ago:
|     > I too am a faggot
|
|---- [–] mrloozer 420 points (+420|-0) bang-oclock ago:
|        > I agree, I am in the faggot realm..
|
|-- [–] pmyb2 -200 points (+0|-200) who cares ago:
|     > I hate myself

Discussion Starter points:
1. gaylord = 3
2. picman = 1
3. mrloozer = 0
4. pmyb2 = 0

I kind of like the idea. @AOU what do you think?

[–] 1 pt

It's not a bad idea. But would be a little complicated to implement with the current commenting system.

If my assumption is correct it would require quite a bit of change to the database itself.

Yes, this will need a new column to store users comment's starter points.

But that's the easy part. The thing is that the code will have to check the db to see the position/status of the comment about to be submitted and attribute the points according to it.

The only real comment chains I've seen tend to be two people bickering at each other.

How would that be handled?

[–] 2 pts

Your own comments aren't counted. So you'll get a point when the other guy responds, but not when you respond.

I'll go on a posting tear from time to time but I'm always around to chat. As for points idc. It's generally just me clearing off my open tabs w/ a bookmarklet.
