I think rewording the "wrong sub or you requested it" message would have soothed over some touchy new users. maybe something like "hey, chum! how's we say we move your post down the lane yander to /s/bettersubpoal

it comes off as aggressive and over reaching.

I say make it more aggressive. Describe their extra chromosomes and make accusations of beastiality etc.
