There are consequences for that. I don't like the mute idea because it becomes a hug box. Funnyjunk is right wing but the liberals with an agenda make accounts and mute anyone who disagrees with them then you get entire threads where only certain people can be heard.
Maybe there's a middle ground where the mute feature blocks PMs and disables notifications for pings, but you can still see the muted user's posts and comments normally on the site. @pmyb2
If they want to have a discussion from one point of view I see no problem with that. It doesn't stop others having other conversations from a different view point in a different thread.
Forcing someone to listen to someone else just because it's a different view point is like saying you can't have an all white or all black fraternity because you need diversity
