I am not arguing for this at all. This is the second comment in a row this has happened. In short: It is clearly a quirk (and unexpected) to click on an image and be sent to a commentary thread. I think that what you are saying (expandos or lack thereof differentiating the type) is sensible. What is not sensible UI design or intuitive is when clicking on an image takes one to a comment thread. Full stop.
