Today I'm unable to see who authored a post without rotating my phone sideways or returning to the sub view.

Same boat. The right sidebar should display above the footer (easiest to implement, since CSS).

The "sidebar" button does not always appear. Using Brave browser for what it's worth.

On mobile, where it lists the subs at the top there's the word sidebar in blue I believe. That is what you're looking for.
