You could spend points on giving users a temporary global flair or title.

Format could be like...
VileMage [did 9/11]
PMYB2 [MASTER TARD WRANGLER] picman [is full of 🥓]

Edit: Clicking on the flair would show who paid for it. Also, a reasonable character limit would be needed, but could be increased with more points spent.

Definently potential for that, but I think it wouldn't be that bad so long as users can see who tagged you and you have to use the points you gain through posting to to do it. An added restriction could be you can't tag the same user more than once in a while, with that time limit increasing the more you tag the same user.

We could let people spend it on(or even just points earned) on stuff for their profile page, or even an auction people could put up items they wanted to get rid of to gain points. Perhaps turn the whole points(or some other modifier) into an actual economy/free market for the site. Its an interesting Idea. I'd love to hear others thoughts on it.

I like the idea of capture the flag on poal. I buy a flag and go pin it to some obscure comment or post and people go try and find it.

I don't see any point in it myself. Hell, even though I have a ton of useless points, they're meaningless. No matter what you did, these points would be the same. If you can buy badges, then it destroys the value of earning a badge. If you can buy tags, you're just making it a way for users to troll others. But hey, maybe your marketplace has merit. I'm just seeing no benefit.

One thing that would be nice and might help others would to put some value on owning or modding a site. Right now, other than being able to ban or delete stuff (something the vast majority won't do) or changing settings, there's no advantage to having and maintaining a sub. On Voat, for instance, a user could post three posts an hour, it became unlimited when you were a sub owner or mod. So there was an incentive to run a sub. I'm not sure that's a good idea here, since we're so small and I wouldn't want to inhibit anyone from posting more ... but maybe there's an incentive that could be added. On both Poal and Phuks, there's no reason to even become a mod ... and once you do own a sub or are a mod, there's no way to ever back away without getting admins involved or deleting your user name completely (another of my pet peeves).

Well I will work on a way to give up ownership/mod status of a sub. Thanks for your thoughts on the matter, any suggestion of what kind of benefit might come with owning/modding a sub?

It's a tough one. There should be some benefit, otherwise there's no incentive to create or mod a sub ... or offer someone a chance to mod. But I wouldn't think it should be posting limits ... not at this point, because we can use all the posts we can get and wouldn't want to stifle anyone's input. Maybe there is nothing that would work. I'm kinda just thinking out loud. Something to mull over for the future maybe.

I'm already bearing the shame of being a lowly yellow username. This would just be another thing to suck at because i don't post enough. If you want to finance the site let people buy ads like on Voat. They were hilarious.

Well no I think this thing would have the opposite effect, If I were to say spend my points(just one version of this idea) It would reduce me back to orange or even yellow depending on how many spent. Its just an idea. Boone came up with it and I thought it would be worth discussing. I think if we did something like it, it should allow users to gain points somehow not just spend them.

I don't know, my first thought was allowing people to spend their earned points on things for their profile or maybe special flairs for posts or something like that. The whole buying thing I hadn't really considered and it feels kind of pay to win to me, but it could be debuffed or something.

@PMYB2, Something to consider looking at in regards to point systems would be MMO economies and how game devs handle building it. I'm suggesting this because it sounds like you might be trying to build a game-like system that insentivizes more posting.
