It would be good if one could search for comments within a thread.

A viable, simpler alternative is a URL parameter that manually specifies the number of comments per page (e.g. “?limit=1000”), or the number of comments loaded initially when using bottomless scrolling. Reddit also has such an URL parameter that shows 500 comments by default (on old.reddit.com).

Is there a technical reason for it?

Suppose a reason could be to ensure fewer resources are used (fewer red users)

I see.

But Level 30 (9000 points) appears maybe a bit too high.

Also, the normal full-site post title search feature is available to everyone, and I don't think text-searching comments needs many resources.

Maybe regular expression search would need somewhat more ressources, but not comment text searching.
