If a post has lots of comments and/or there is lots of votes on those posts, then the post should rank higher in the page listings. In turn I think the 'points' a user gets for making the post should not be based solely on the number of up votes the post received, but also based on how much discussion the post generated. This would do many things:

1) It encourages commenting on posts 2) It encourages people to read comments and vote on them 3) It makes it harder to vote farm and brigade. You can automate and script up-voting and posting. Much harder to fake actual discussion.

That's a good idea, but it could also be used by trolls to push shitposts filled with shitcomments to the front page.

How is that different from shitposters vote farming it to the front page? I can write a script to upvote very easily. If I tried to do this with actual comments it would be very obvious and it would be publicly tied to the bot accounts used to make the comments... Up Votes are anonymous... comments are not.

I see your point though... I could see someone making a million comments on their own post... Maybe if the algorithm counted then number of unique users that comment on a post?

The idea may require refinement but I think the general concept is solid. Rank posts not just on their score but on the comment activity as well.

Up Votes are anonymous...

Not to the code that is there to avoid vote brigading and farming.

Many trolls have tried, failed and went back to the other place.

Good point. The back end anti-farming and anti-brigading scripts see all.

...but I see this not just as a part of the Poal immune system, but as a good feature on it's own. I want to see actual discussion and debate encouraged.
