The former apperas to be a physical switch, the latter relies on the SD card reader to respect it.

Intereting. I always though the SD card switch was hardware. If not, it was likely done as a backdoor to mobile devices which often use SD cards.

It is not the hardware of the SD card itself, but the hardware responsible for reading the SD card may or may not respect it, which is outside of the operating system's control.
