I noted this idea in 2018, so maybe it had been done in the meantime, but not that I know yet.
I got this idea when I saw that some YouTube videos have been deleted, and I thought that someone out there must have downloaded it.
This idea is not mature yet, but some food for thought.
I imagine a software which allows users to combat online censorship (YouTube, Twitter, Reddit, Wikipedia (en.everybodywiki.com) and other websites.) by devoting some hard drive space. (Let's say 50 GB for example. Or maybe different space storage amounts for different media types.)
Videos they watch, tweets and Reddit content they read and Wikipedia articles they open will be downloaded to the devoted disk space.
But the video IDs and metadata of suggested videos and search results will be downloaded too.
If any part of the botnet detects a deletion (automatical scan or by user), the part that notices it informs the botnet and the part that owns the video footage shares the deleted material to the users requesting the deleted video or a central repository.
Other features
- Find out if a news article has been edited
- Users of the anti-censorship botnet repeatedly download articles from selected news outlets after publication. Different users download different news sites. If an edit is noticed, the rest of the botnet will be informed.
- Decentralized Wayback Machine
