My husband told our 7 yr old we were going to raise rabbits for food, more just to see her reaction and because he has been intrested with this idea ever since he read a book where a family did this. She said something along the lines of "ok but before we eat them can I play with them?" This girl is very comfortable with the circle of life.
Your does and bucks you can keep as pets. The buck will be a bit iffy at times though when he doesnt get enough action. Ever since we started breeding (personally, as my family has always done it) we have been of the opinion that they are better than cats and dogs. Also older domesticated rabbits gain fat, which is good and something that you do not get in wild rabbits (except pregnant or nursing ones). So after 8-10 years of having your pet you can eat it.
