I was outside walking the dogs a short while ago and stopped to chat with a neighbor of mine. While we were talking my dogs alerted on two squirrels. They were black squirrels which is odd, because we usually only see the grey and reddish ones around here.

I commented on that and my neighbor said, "There goes the squirrel neighborhood."

I know that this will come off a a total "seems like a woosh moment". I got the joke, appreciate your neighbour being 'aware',

...but there's a bit of weird trivia (I'm pissed that I'm going to sound sooo jewey with my "Well, ackshually...") under the category of really unimportant shit I know that crowds out the useful stuff. Black squirrels are grey squirrels with a faulty gene (well that part sounds pretty plausible) , but because of the darker colour have started to out compete the grey-greys in colder climates because they absorb heat better.

FWIW & for all that I know, the info could've come from a thoroughly jewed source & I didn't realize it at the time. It would have been pre-2000.

Makes sense. I only ever saw black squirrels up near Chicago when I was a kid. Lake effect winters are no joke.

Pretty sure fur composition does more for heat retention than color. See; Polar Bears, Siberian Tigers, Snow Owls... Any white animal living in snow. The downy undercoat with a white outercoat is much more useful due to camouflage than the small amount of heat retention of a black outercoat. Those climates don't get a lot of sun. Camo>catching rays.

I don't know that is necessarily an "awake" moment. It was more that he felt it was OK to make a black joke in public.

As far as black vs grey squirrels goes, black squirrels are a sub-group of grey squirrels. They're more tolerant to cold weather, which is why they can push out grey squirrels.
