The usual reason to put off divorce when a couple doesn't get along is for the sake of the children, to provide a "stable" 2 parent household until they are 18 or older. The selfish parents get the divorce with no thought of repercussions on their kids - unless one parent is out of control and prompt divorce is a better for the mental health of the spouse and kid(s).
