The nice 4 bedroom house in today's dollars would be less than $75,000. My Dad built our house in the early sixties. My parents only took out a $5,000 loan so my Dad could get everything enclosed before winter hit. (Southeast of Buffalo NY). Seven months from ground break to enclosed and another 6 months till move in. He did the vast majority by himself, except for the cement block cellar walls. Need expert hands there. Luckily my Uncle was an electrician. The county required a certified and I think union electrician to sign off on the electrical job. But my Dad did all the work, including the design for the whole house.
