This used to be a common thing in Scandinavia too, as well. Babies would be left outside, bundled up for naps in cold weather. I can't be certain, but I think studies have shown that babies that grew up doing "cold naps" had much less upper respiratory infections, colds, flus and fevers throughout their lives versus babies that didn't receive this kind of therapy.

A common medical recommendation (even today) for babies with croupy coughs is to take them for walks in the cold air. Reduces inflammation, relieves constriction of the upper airway.
