Let's see here...

  • Judy Garland (Dorothy) - died from overdose of barbiturate at age 47
  • Raymond Bolger (Scarecrow) - died from bladder cancer at age 83
  • Bert Lahr (the Lion) - died of pneumonia at age 72
  • Jack Haley (the Tin Man) - died from a heart attack at age 81

Of the four characters in that scene in the movie, only one died from cancer and it wasn't even a form of cancer typically associated with asbestos exposure. Really the only death in that list that is kind of horrific was Judy Garland's self-inflicted death. The others were more like common causes for men of old age in the decades past. I know what the meme is implying, but it just doesn't line up very well with the reality of what happened to them later in life.

I am probably remembering this wrong but I thought it was mostly the crew and stage hands that ended up with problems. Ex. The people cleaning it up or staging it.

I still don't wanna be round it... it truly is some nasty shit, inhale just a wisp of it

I'm sure you have inhaled much more of it than you think throughout your lifetime. You've also taken in lots of radiative material into your body from all that above ground nuclear testing done in the 50s and later. But you'll be fine. Maybe.

In Australia they used to have asbestos shoveling competitions (picture is from 1962, all but one of the people in this photo have died from asbestos related conditions): https://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/atom/3467

I went to school and one of my buddies i had lunch with stopped to talk about what happened at work that day. He's a smart, hard worker with alot of hustle. He did alot of work for this one contractor in this big dirty building. He looked like he'd been sweeping chimnies all day.

He brought up a concern for the contractors to consider, a small handful of dust, and said it needed to be tested to see if it was asbestos. The contractor laughed and blew the pile into his face and said "GET BACK TO WORK, theres no way thats asbestos. thats not the first time someone tried to trick me like that."

So, sorry to all the construction workers out there working on old buildings who's health is not being taken very seriously

...but as asbestos is natural. It's mined.
