Archimedes had a feeling things weren't lining up, so he built a giant mirror to float up on a hot air balloon. Then everything burst into flames and he said, "lol, close enough."

Cartography of old is insanely impressive. I feel like coastlines were much easier than inland since your sitting at sea level. Once you throw elevation changes in the mix triangulating your position becomes much more complicated.
Yeah cartography is brilliant, I wish I could afford some of the old historic maps because they are absolutely works of art and a real passionate investment into understanding the world.
