And resizing the images any further would probably pixelate the text to be completely illegible.

What you can do then is to upload large pics within a comment and modify the embed markdowns into hyperlinks and copy/paste them in the post content instead, because embedding several very large images in a comment will overload the server's bandwidth as the images are automatically loaded upon opening a post.
