There is more to this. Beyond "look how dumb we are" "how many can you answer" most do not write things by hand, and the electronic device, PC or smartphone will have spell check, so many don't have to use their brain to recollect words not often used. If you asked kids today to answer this, they will use their phones to find the answers, not to "cheat" but just to "fetch the answer" The kids in 1912 if would at least try to commit this to memory.
