Memorial Day is for remembering the men and women who died in service to America.
Torpedo 8 (VT-8) reached the halfway point without sighting any IJN carriers on the morning of June 4th, 1942. Their own carrier, the USS Hornet, was 180 miles behind them on the same heading. They had to drop the heavy torpedos now if they were going to make it back on the remaining fuel. They kept going. All 15 planes were shot down when they spotted the Japs an hour later and tried to attack without fighter cover. But the Jap combat air patrol was now at sea level when the American fighters and dive bombers arrived. The Battle of Midway resulted in the sinking of 4 of the 6 IJN aircraft carriers that bombed Pearl Harbor 6 months earlier. USS Yorktown was also sunk by enemy torpedos. Remember those that gave their lives in the service to our country.
