It was controlled by dint of being completely isolated. It doesn't really matter when person A sleeps in the same room as person B - if all 17 of you are the only ones for miles, you're all in close proximity to one another most of the day.

They specifically mentioned how their sleeping places could get wet, for example

Being wet doesn't really mean anything. You're not supposed to be able to get a virus if there are no viruses to get. By accepted definitions, any viruses that these people would get should have been gotten long before 17 weeks. That's what the article is trying to say - you can isolate yourself from mankind in an inhospitable environment, and it still doesn't help. Isolating yourself in house but still going to work, to the store, etc. is going to be just the other side of worthless.
