I’ve read too much about this stuff. The type of slavery that went on back then is kind of unimaginable given our modern sensibilities. I think it was the sack of Baltimore Ireland that got me into it. Being a slave to a Muslim was such a terrible thing that in some Middle Eastern countries the Christian parents used to tattoo a cross on the inside of their children’s wrists so that if they were ever captured and enslaved the children would be killed when the enslavers sliced the Christian tattoo from their flesh which was required for you to remain in the Muslim household.
