The Flavian amphitheater didn't operate too different from sports stadiums of today. Killing of people was a rarity as even during the pagan period Romans did place a fairly high value upon human life. You were more likely to see a sacrifice of an animal to mark the opening of the days games and maybe another at the end with the lottery to include folks in the nosebleed seats getting a shot at some quality meat.
