I have my doubts that child sacrifice was as common in the classical Mediterranean world as historical accounts would have us believe. "Passing through the fire" and being burned to death as a sacrifice are two very different things. And if you think the Romans could not possibly have gotten it so wrong, take a look at what they said about the early Christians, who were called cannibals, mother fuckers, and shit eaters, among other nasty things.
