I'm shocked anyone here needs to be told this but I followed that saga pretty closely at the time. They held a referendum with international observers and everything was above board. Almost zero violence. Much unlike the maidan coup that preceded it. Also watched when the new govt sent troops to suppress the uprising in Odessa, the soldiers turned up, took the firing pins out of their rifles and handed them to the rebels. Nobody was interested and nobody trusted the govt.

They've had a few referendums since 2014 and numerous polls and every-single-time the population of Crimea voted in the late eighties to nineties to remain tied to Russia..
