Tl;Dr

Winds were blowing hard east-north-east from Nevada that day: Radioactivity bled over most of the North-East towards, even touching as far as New York, leading to a cancer-spikes in the regions for the next few decades.

Utah got it worst.

Uncle Sam spent every minute since the blast to cover it up.

It's mere partial - an incomplete list. I recommend the book: quite a few "crackers" went off - this was just one of them.
