I haven't seen this mentioned, but this is just prior to the Muslim conquests, which really hit their stride after taking Syria. Theodora likely initiated the corruption that allowed the Muslims to conquer, because why would anyone risk their lives fighting to defend that? Harsh but just rulers sounds like a breath of fresh air compared to capricious whores who don't trust any man they can't control.
