There are thousands of these fairly evenly distributed and spanning centurys. Usually not on a river and not very large.

I'd wager it's just down to slow urbanisation. Living in the middle of nowhere was hardwork with no welfare not to mention dull. If your not near a thoughfare prospects dry up, or you just get out competed.

Same is true even now of towns in Australia.
