We had the ability. We had the resources. We had the bombers.

We could have covered the entire island of Iwo Jima in 3 feet (1meter) of coal and set that motherfucker on fire with the same incendiary bombs that we used to kill 100,000 German men, women and children in Dresden if we wanted to.

We could have baked those Japanese soldiers in their tunnels.

But then... we would have missed that great photo op of those Marines raising the flag on Mt. Suribachi, right? (after 7k were killed)

Imagine Imperial Japan today. ...Toughest little motherfuckers you ever met in your life. Those fucking Nips were amazingly honorable. I wish we never destroyed their way of life. If the Japs could have held out for a few more years with the oil / trade embargo the USA and allies imposed, they would be ruling all of Asia today. (and Israel would be sucking their dicks in order to keep them from sending a few flattops into the eastern Mediterranean)
